 Target Grant

CIS Receives Grant for After School Arts Project
December 2007

Communities In Schools (CIS) today announced a partnership with Target in recognition of its efforts in providing strong, quality after school programs. The $2,000 grant funding will build upon the existing 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21CCLC) program. The “Arts Project” is expected to provide one hundred students from grades three, four and five with an array of activities in visual arts, dance or music. The project will begin in January when the elementary school site will be determined.

Landfall Foundation Again Provides Grant
for CIS 21st Century Program
November 2007

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Brunswick County’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21CCLC) was awarded funding for the second consecutive year by the Landfall Foundation’s Grant committee in Wilmington to continue to enhance existing after school programs at two Leland elementary schools.
The intensified service called the “Mentoring Project” is expected to begin again in January by matching twenty-six after school students showing the greatest need with mentors. This project is aimed to help the third, fourth and fifth grade Belville and Lincoln students academically, socially and culturally.

Kathy Smith, project director for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers in Brunswick County said, “Students will team with volunteers and mentors who have been recruited from the community and trained to provide a nurturing relationship and encourage youth. We believe that mentors will not only help students improve their academics and school attendance rate but will help them to gain confidence. Relationships are important for kids, they need to know that someone cares and believes in them. Once that seed is planted it starts to grow like a wildflower. Students will be nurtured for the duration of the program.”

The project is expected to show substantial results for the students, many of whom have failed to respond to other academic support services provided through the center. Many students need more focused attention and that is what the Mentoring Project is designed to provide. Once again mentors will be matched with students after school for 8 hours per week. Mentors will shadow the student providing academic assistant during homework time and skill building activities. They will provide much needed encouragement and motivation while building caring relationships.

Although the 21CCLC foundation of services is solid through the funding provided by the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI), help from the community allows ongoing augmentation of after school services and will be critical when DPI funding ends next school year. The community provides resources whether it is in expertise, dollars or volunteers. In this case, the Landfall Foundation again opened their arms to embrace these kids.
