What is Family Literacy?


Family Literacy is a program designed to improve the education of children and adults by integrating early childhood education and adult education into a unified program.

The program provides family centered education that involves parents and children in a cooperative effort of learning, enabling parents to become active partners in their children's education and to assist them in reaching their potential.


Program Components


Adult Education

Basic Education Skills instruction and/ or English as a Second Language (ESL) is provided for the parents.

Parent Time

Parents meet to discuss issues of raising children and learn about child development, while developing positive adult relationships.


Early Childhood Education

Children are provided opportunities to learn through appropriate activities with qualified teachers.

Parent and Child Interaction

Parents and children share time together by playing and having fun in the child's classroom.

Job Skills

Parents learn new skills to help with securing employment, while exploring career options and job opportunities.

Family Literacy Eligibility


Requirements for participation in the program are:
  • Both parent and at least one child must be involved in the program
  • Families must have children ages eight years or under
  • Parent must be seeking GED or English as a second language
