CIS celebrates the heart of afterschool programs during “Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week”
April 23-27, 2018
Communities In Schools of Brunswick County (CIS) is joining with the National Afterschool Association (NAA) to celebrate the professionals that are at the heart of afterschool programs during “Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week” April 23-27, 2018.
“We believe Afterschool professionals make a difference in the lives of young people,” said Bonnie Jordan, CIS Executive Director. “We encourage everyone to join us this week in thanking afterschool professionals working for CIS and across Brunswick County.”
Afterschool Professionals work with children and youth in diverse school and community-based settings to provide a wide variety of extended learning opportunities and care during out-of-school hours. Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week is a joint effort of community partners, afterschool programs, youth and child care workers, and individuals who have committed to dedicating time to recognize and appreciate those who work with youth during out-of-school hours. The week is marked by celebrations and public relations efforts to encourage people to thank afterschool professionals serving children in programs and organizations across the nation.
CIS operates afterschool programming in Brunswick County through the 21st Century Community Learning Center programs (21 CCLC) based at Supply Elementary School as well as Cedar Grove Middle and Shallotte Middle Schools. The 21 CCLC Afterschool Program is providing homework assistance, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) project-based learning, and individualized web-based instruction in Reading, Language Arts, and Math to 277 students this school year. Afterschool programs are credited as the way to enhance education in STEM, literacy, the arts, social and emotional learning, health and wellness, and more.
How can I thank an Afterschool Professional?
- Declare on social media: I appreciate the Afterschool Professionals who make a difference in the lives of young people. #heartofafterschool
- Give a hand-written card from you and/or your child to the afterschool professional in your life.
- Send an email to an afterschool professional’s supervisor describing why that person is appreciated.
- Bring treats to the staff at your afterschool program.
CIS 21 CCLC afterschool program staff work each day to provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for students attending Supply Elementary, Cedar Grove Middle and Shallotte Middle Schools. CIS afterschool staff help students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offer students a broad array of enrichment activities such as STEM, art and youth development that complement their regular academic programs; and work closely with families to ensure the academic success of their children.
“The success of CIS afterschool programs are largely measured by data related to academics, however, the unquestionable success of impacting a student’s personal growth cannot be measured by data but occurs through influence of the dedicated education professionals in CIS programs,” said Joann Shanley, Director of CIS 21 CCLC Middle School Programs.
Aiden, a sixth grade student at Shallotte Middle School CIS 21st CCLC afterschool program, began the year quiet and reluctant about participating in any group activities. With continued instructor encouragement, Aiden agreed to his first group project of automobile design. Students were given materials and assigned the task of creating a rubber band powered car including chassis, wheels and axle. Aiden stepped out of his comfort zone and became an integral part of the design process as well as the successful builder of the car for his team. Aiden has made great strides in afterschool classes and group participation. He has been recognized by staff and peers for his achievements and continued hard work during CIS 21 CCLC afterschool STEM programming.
